COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three students from Hudson PEP Elementary School were surprised when their art was unveiled on the side of two city sanitation trucks yesterday in Longview after winning the Keep Long Beautiful art truck contest. The trucks will now display the student artwork along their routes—letting the whole community enjoy the creative design.  KETK

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Caddo Nation of Oklahoma took back nearly 3,000 tribal artifacts and human remains from the Gregg County Historical Museum on April 26 and 27 because they were removed without consent. Museum and tribal representatives will work together to refresh exhibits and build a replica Caddo hut to help educate visitors about Caddo history.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The library is holding an Adult Craft Day event on May 18 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.—learn how to make your own paper for gifts, journaling, or art, with projects drying overnight for later pickup. Sign up is required due to limited space.  City of Longview

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • House Bill 2109 passed the Natural Resources Committee on April 23 — with East Texas supporters urging the Calendar Committee to schedule it for a May 15 hearing— and may flood up to 200,000 acres of land, potentially forcing families to relocate homes and schools if enacted.  KETK
  • The North East Texas Regional Mobility Authority is hosting meetings this week to discuss plans to extend Toll 49 to US 271. People can learn about the draft Environmental Impact Statement process and ask questions from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Tyler Rose Garden Center and on Thursday at Longview Exhibit Center—available online as well.  KETK
  • The Longview Police Department will host the Junior Police Academy from June 2 to 6 at Pine Tree High School—900 Northwest Drive to give five days of hands-on training for cadets who have completed 7th grade and are under 21. Lunch is provided daily and registration requires contacting Officer Josh Marrs at 903-331-2858 as spots are limited.  City of Longview
