COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Women’s Center of East Texas in Longview is asking for donations of items such as diapers, baby wipes, body wash and feminine products to help survivors of sexual abuse. Donations will be accepted at the shelter on Hollybrook Drive from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through the end of this week + the supplies are meant to support survivors as they work to regain stability. KETK
- ➤ The Women’s Center of East Texas and the East Texas Crisis Center announced a new podcast called Barrier Breakers: Building Communities and Connecting the Dots to raise awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault and to inform the community about survivor support and new laws. They have met twice a month in Kilgore since the end of January (and will invite community guests soon) to expand the conversation across their 11-county area. Kilgore News Herald

- ➤ On Tuesday around 12:20 p.m., a driver died after a medical emergency caused a multi-vehicle crash at Hollybrook Drive and Judson Road, and another person was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. KETK

- ➤ Theatre Longview’s comedy improv group Duck. Duck. Moose! will perform a completely improvised 1970s game show mashup at the Longview Community Center at 7 p.m. Saturday — the performance is their final show of the 2024-25 season and will offer discount codes for early bird Laugh Out Longview Improv Festival tickets. - ➤ Ryan Nichols, a pardoned January 6 participant who served prison time, announced his run for Congress in Texas' first district in downtown Longview on April 9 — he said he regrets the violence and plans to support East Texans on issues like agriculture, border security and oil; he also vowed to oppose the sale of Lake O' the Pines water to protect local resources. Nichols outlined his vision during a press conference, emphasizing his commitment to family and community values. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Three Corps members from East Texas, Cody Hammer, Jenny Brady, and Stacey Coester, are serving 29-day assignments in California to help homeowners clear debris after January wildfires destroyed over 16,000 structures and claimed 30 lives. They work with more than 400 Corps personnel and 3,000 contractors (removing 4.5 million tons of debris) to support recovery (by tracking debris removal data for safety and accuracy).
