COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Longview Lobo Choir held a service for veterans on Saturday—honoring National Vietnam War Veterans Day after canceling a trip to Hawaii. Each veteran received a medal and turkey legs were served at the event held from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Longview High School parking lot.  KETK
  • The Longview Arboretum and Nature Center celebrated its fifth anniversary last week with a ribbon-cutting hosted by the Longview Chamber of Commerce at 706 W. Cotton St. The center will host Music in the Gardens starting April 3—an Easter egg hunt on April 19 and a Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 4 add to the planned events.  Longview News-Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Spring has arrived in East Texas and venomous snakes are returning—wildlife biologist Reuben Gay said snakes are often found near water and green areas. He advised residents to watch their steps and call 911 if bitten—doctors need a picture of the snake for proper treatment.  KETK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Kilgore Area Chamber of Commerce will host a forum on April 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kilgore First Baptist Church where local candidates running for mayor, city council, the school board and the college board will share their views on improving city government. Moderators will ask questions and set time limits for each response — giving voters clear insight into the election race.  Kilgore News Herald
