COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bags, Boots, & Bingo will be held on April 15 with a bingo game offering prizes & a silent auction of designer bags and boots benefiting The Martin House Children's Advocacy Center. The event will offer residents a chance to support the center while enjoying a fun community activity.  City of Longview

CRIME NEWS

  • Mabank man John Clague allegedly shot his sister Samantha Moore on Monday at around 3:26 p.m. at his residence near Bonita Point outside Gun Barrel City—he was later arrested for murder and is held on a $2 million bond.  KETK

CULTURE NEWS

  • The library youth services team will host a teen event on April 1 at (5:00 PM) for (ages 13-17) that focuses on creating blackout poetry through upcycling book pages and includes light snacks, games and book discussion. The event will also cover the Poem for a Pickle National Poetry Month Challenge.  City of Longview

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Peltier Scholarship Committee is offering $1,000 scholarships to students in East Texas whose parents work in education. Eligible high school seniors and college students can apply now as the deadline will be April 15—winners will be announced early May.  KETK
  • TJC students gave a guided tour with sign language at the East Texas Oil Museum in Kilgore to help the deaf and hard-of-hearing community access the exhibits—interpreting a nearly 20-minute movie as part of an end-of-year project before graduating in May.  KETK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Twenty-two law enforcement officers from Longview, Tyler and other East Texas agencies completed active-shooter training at an abandoned Hallsville ISD building on Tuesday and Wednesday. Longview police led the session with ALERRT—designed to boost coordination among regional responders.  Longview News-Journal
  • East Texas lawmakers said they will hold hearings soon on House Bill 17 that limits land sales to buyers from countries seen as threats, and they are filing bills to protect local water and rural hospitals. Lawmakers also reported they will vote against a school choice bill — the regular session ends on June 2.  KETK

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community Healthcore held its first Developmental Disabilities Awareness Day at the Maude Cobb Convention Center in Longview, offering games and resource booths to help families and individuals learn about support for developmental disabilities (local behavioral health and recovery services were also highlighted). The event brought together hundreds of community members and featured Texarkana rapper Young Kazz as the honored guest (his story of overcoming serious health challenges served as a symbol of hope).  Longview News-Journal
  • CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System celebrated 90 years of service to Gregg County on Thursday with proclamations from local officials at its Longview Medical Center. The hospital began as a 47-bed facility in 1935 and now employs over 3,000 associates with a network that served thousands of patients last year—reflecting over $400 million in local investment.  KETK
