COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kilgore Lions Club will celebrate its 95th anniversary on April 9 at Tempest Golf Club with a golf tournament + rifle raffle to support local service projects. Teams join for $600 while raffle tickets offer a chance to win a Savage Axis 2 XP Gray from Eagle Eye Firearms.  Kilgore News Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Grammy-winning religious vocalist David Phelps will perform Friday at Woodland Hills Baptist Church in Longview at 7 p.m. as part of his Speak of Love Tour featuring songs from his latest album, and tickets can be purchased online.  Longview News-Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Officials announced a $16 billion natural gas generator will be built in Anderson County southwest of Tyler as part of a trade deal with Japan. NextEra Energy Resources will operate the facility that is projected to create 3,000 long-term jobs and lower local property taxes.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jennifer Hattaway was sworn in on March 16 to fill Lon Ford's unexpired term on the Kilgore College Board of Trustees (Central Zone representative); her term will run until the May general election in 2029.  Kilgore News Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Texas A&M Forest Service warns that windy weather will boost wildfire risks in the Western Plains on Thursday and Friday, with cooler post-frontal weather expected statewide on Saturday. Texans are advised to stay aware (and prepared) as conditions change.  Kilgore News Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longview officials propose an overlay of Park Street in the Stamper Park area to boost improvements linked to the new public pool set to open this summer. They will reallocate $150,000 for the overlay and $100,000 for first-time homebuyer grants (send comments by April 1).  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Athletes from East Texas will compete at the state powerlifting meet at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene this weekend (the event runs Friday to Saturday).  Longview News-Journal
  • Freshmen Sarah Beall from Spring Hill and Josie Stephens from Carthage earned Pitcher of the Week honors while sophomore Makayla Fobb from White Oak was named Hitter of the Week for games played March 16-21, according to the Longview News-Journal.  Longview News-Journal
  • East Texas high school girls earned several medals, including multiple golds, at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association State Meet held this past weekend at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg (results highlight strong local talent).  Longview News-Journal
  • The Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association released its March 22 poll results Tuesday showing Spring Hill receiving votes as part of the CLASS 4A list—joining teams such as Calallen and Pleasant Grove. The poll ranks high school baseball teams across classifications.  Longview News-Journal
  • Morgan Garrett was named head women's basketball coach at LeTourneau University after a nationwide search, announced by VP Dr. Tim Sceggel. Garrett comes to Longview from East Texas Baptist where she served as a top assistant and becomes the program's eighth coach (bringing extensive coaching experience).  Longview News-Journal
  • Christian Heritage Classical School’s Griff Holt and Beckville’s Reed Chapman earned top weekly baseball honors for their strong play from March 16–21, with Holt hitting a home run and 10 RBI and Chapman pitching a no-hitter in his only start.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Texas Girls Coaches Association softball poll was released Tuesday, March 24 at 8:14 a.m., listing team records for six classes with top rankings for Ganado, Clyde, Dumas, and Montgomery Lake Creek. The poll offers statewide insight for local softball fans.  Longview News-Journal
  • The No. 10 ranked Spring Hill Panthers beat rival Pine Tree 4 to 1 on Tuesday, Mar. 24 at Pirate Field in District 16 4A action. The win improves their record to 13 wins, 6 losses and 2 ties as both teams will meet again Friday at Panther Field.  Longview News-Journal
