COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday—called the biggest dog block party in East Texas—about 325 dogs and 1,000 supporters gathered at the Longview Animal Care and Adoption Center for the eighth annual Strut Your Mutt fundraiser, where they walked a mile, played games and visited vendors. Shelter staff and Longview PAWS organized the event to raise funds for the animal shelter. Longview News-Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday the Texas Senate passed a bill by a 23—8 vote that shifts the final decision on public school library books from librarians to school boards. The measure now goes to the Texas House for further review. Longview News-Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local Kilgore officials appointed election and ballot board judges for the May 3 election, with Karen Custer serving as the presiding judge for the general election and Dimi Desantis overseeing early voting (alternates are Sherri Atchley and Patsy Whipple). The city election will offer early voting at City Hall (April 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 28, and 29) and mail ballots must be received by close of business on April 22. Kilgore News Herald
- ➤ A federal judge—Judge Xavier Rodriguez—ruled that parts of Texas’ law SB1, which require an ID for mail ballots and an oath from helpers, are unfair to people with disabilities. The ruling lets these rules stay until municipal elections end on May 3 and orders them to be removed afterward while Texas is expected to appeal. Longview News-Journal
