COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Caldwell Zoo welcomed its first red-ruffed lemur babies when Kintana gave birth on Feb. 14 — staff are keeping the infants indoors for 60 to 90 days to monitor growth. The milestone boosts the population to 180 under human care.  Longview News-Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Bullfrog Marina suffered high winds on Sunday that demolished its main dock and destroyed several boats, while cabins and RV spots remained intact (the marina is now repairing damage and planning upcoming fishing tournaments as the Corps of Engineers assesses the situation).  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Last Friday, the Hallsville ISD Education Foundation celebrated its 25th year with its Purple Prize Patrol, awarding teachers over $70,000 in grants for innovative projects that create hands-on learning opportunities — initiatives that support creative classroom methods.  Longview News-Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • East Texas basketball players earned all-region honors from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches on Tuesday, March 17 — with selections including athletes from Tyler Legacy, Whitehouse and several local schools.  Longview News-Journal
  • Longview’s Jadasia Mims and Mount Pleasant’s Kammie Terrell earned top weekly softball honors for games played March 9 to 14, with Mims excelling as hitter and Terrell strong on the mound + the awards were issued by the Longview News-Journal.  Longview News-Journal
  • LeTourneau softball senior Jenna Carter earned SCAC Hitter of the Week honors, batting .500 and leading her team to a midweek doubleheader today and a weekend series. Eight men's and five women's track athletes were named to the All-West Region team after performances in shot put, triple jump, and hurdles.  Longview News-Journal
  • The Spring Hill Lady Panthers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win 5-3 over the Henderson Lady Lions on Monday at Lady Panther Field in Longview, improving their record to 20-5 while Henderson fell to 20-10-1.  Longview News-Journal
  • New Diana’s Mason Sherman was named Hitter of the Week and Sabine’s Kale Laing earned Pitcher of the Week honors (games played March 9 to 14) by the Longview News-Journal; Sherman hit .462 in five games and Laing pitched an 85-pitch complete game in a 4 to 3 win over White Oak.  Longview News-Journal
  • At the Tommy Miller Relay event today, teams raced in track events with schools from across the region. Texas High led the varsity boys with 118 points while Longview earned 30 points in the boys division and 81 points in the girls division + local athletes posted competitive times.  Kilgore News Herald
  • The Texas Girls Coaches Association released its state softball poll on March 16 — Floydada led Class 1A and 2A — ranking schools across divisions for local sports fans.  Longview News-Journal
