- ➤ The library will host a Dr. Seuss-themed party on March 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Moeschle Meeting Room to celebrate Read Across America Day with cupcake decorating, guest readers, game stations, and raffle prizes drawn every 30 minutes (for children aged 1 to 6), free to attend. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Greater Longview United Way held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, Mar. 3 at Presbyterian Children’s Center, 301 N. Center St., unveiling its 29th Read to Succeed book vending machine. The machine rewards students with tokens for behavior, academic growth and character development. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ A committee of White Oak ISD school faculty and parents voted 4 to 1 on Monday to reclassify The Perks of Being a Wallflower from the school library to the public section, limiting student access during school hours while the book remains available after 3:45 p.m. at the public library. - ➤ Tatum’s Colt Bullard was named Hitter of the Week and Pitcher of the Week during games played Feb. 23—28—striking out eight in six innings and hitting .500 with a grand slam in an 8—3 win over New Diana; he finished with a 3—0 record and a 1.50 ERA. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Harmony’s Kylie Seahorn earned Pitcher of the Week and Carthage teammates Callie Lancaster and Jaleah Williams shared Hitter of the Week honors from the Longview News-Journal for standout softball games played Feb. 23–28, with Seahorn striking out 39 in 17 innings while Lancaster and Williams posted high batting averages. - ➤ On Monday night, Hawkins advanced to the regional final for the first time since 1986 by beating Cayuga 62-50 in the Class 2A Division 1 Region III semifinals at Canton High School. They extended their winning streak to 15 games, overcoming a late rally by Cayuga. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ Pine Tree will host the 22nd annual Berryhill’s Twisted 54 tournament, a high school golf event where teams of six (using a rotating medalist) will play 36 holes on Friday at Wood Hollow Golf Club in Longview and conclude with 18 holes on Saturday at Tempest Golf Club in Gladewater. - ➤ Three LeTourneau men’s basketball players were named All-SCAC after the team won the Blue Division title at the Conway tournament on Tuesday, March 3. Jackson Mayes (20.1 ppg leader), Teigan Edwards, and Logan Brinkoeter earned the honors through votes from league coaches and sports information directors. Longview News-Journal
