COMMUNITY NEWS

  • East Texas Trekkers, a noncompetitive walking club (led by volunteer Helen Hull) that promotes fitness and friendship, organizes scenic walks across local historical sites. The group will hold its next walk on March 28 in Nacogdoches and welcomes locals to explore new and familiar sights.  Longview News-Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Five local steam engine enthusiasts moved the nearly 100-year-old Temple Lumber Co. No. 20 from Pineland to Rusk and plan to restore it for education and history as part of their nonprofit Southern Pine Locomotive Co.; they will begin rebuilding track and raising funds (a nod to local timber roots).  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school athletes earned Texas High School Coaches Association Academic All-State honors for the 2025 football season while keeping a GPA of 92 or above. Recipients from several local schools were recognized with Elite, first team, second team, or honorable mention distinctions.  Longview News-Journal
  • Longview ISD is asking community members to name its new career and technical education facility at Longview High School (a project funded by the $456 million bond) with nominations open until 1 a.m. Jan. 22.  Longview News-Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Upshur County commissioners approved a plan to search for a building to impound dangerous dogs and hire a specialist after Sheriff Larry Webb presented the issue. Funding for the initiative will be discussed in the fiscal budget starting Oct. 1 - addressing nearly 20 years of animal-related calls.  Longview News-Journal

  • Longview’s Georgia Scott won the 800-meter race at the Corky Classic on Friday, Jan. 16, finishing in 2:07.49 as TCU track saw top finishes from London Tucker and Ben Kirbo. TCU will resume competition today at 11 a.m.  Longview News-Journal
  • A local sports writer recapped wild NFL coaching rumors after Friday's Wild Card weekend, detailing potential moves for figures like Brian Flores and Mike Tomlin as teams plan future changes. The commentary noted that coaching shifts could bring dramatic changes in the league.  Longview News-Journal
  • Local baseball teams Lobos, Pirates and Panthers practiced on the diamond Friday, Jan. 16. Panthers’ senior Eli Emery gave pointers to fellow catcher Keaton Wilkins during the session.  Longview News-Journal
  • Kilgore College softball introduced nine high school signees for the 2026-27 season yesterday at 9:30 a.m. in the McLaurin Administration Building on campus, and the signees (joining head coach Amber Williams in her third recruiting class) will open the season on Jan. 24 at the Ballpark at KC Commons.  Longview News-Journal
