EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Officials and contractors broke ground on a new gymnasium at New Diana ISD, funded by a $28 million bond approved in 2024. Superintendent Carl Key said the project, which includes campus repairs and safety upgrades, is expected to finish by December or early 2027. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ High school volleyball athletes from East Texas earned Academic All-State honors from the Texas High School Coaches Association during the 2025 seasons. The award requires a minimum GPA (92+), good moral character and team standing. Longview News-Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pine Tree ISD Superintendent Steve Clugston launched his independent Texas Senate campaign on Wednesday at Carmela's Magical Venue in Longview, urging voters to choose a moderate approach to education and water resource issues. He stressed local control (and bipartisan cooperation) as an antidote to extreme partisanship. Longview News-Journal

- ➤ Local high school Spring Hill was ranked No.2 in the THSBCA preseason baseball poll for Class 4A — results released Thursday, Jan.15 show the team’s strong potential as the season nears. Longview News-Journal
- ➤ The Lady Lobos won 75-39 over Rockwall-Heath on Friday, Jan. 16, improving to 16-4 overall and 2-2 in district play. The team will travel to North Forney on Tuesday as they continue their season. Kilgore News Herald
- ➤ The Lady Lobos rallied from an early deficit for a 6-2 win over Dallas Hillcrest on Thursday in the Rockwall-Heath Invitational. The undefeated team now stands 7-0 and will face Fort Bend Elkins on Friday in Rockwall as they prepare for District play. Longview News-Journal
