  • East Texas hospitals reported the New Year’s Day births for 2026; at Longview’s Christus Good Shepherd, Kylie was born at 2:34 p.m., while Tyler’s Christus Mother Frances and UT Health Tyler welcomed Hallie Jo at 9:55 a.m. and Zinnia shortly after midnight.  Longview News-Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local library hosts cybersecurity and digital skills workshops in Spanish and English on January 7 and 8 with sessions from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; attendees qualifying for both will receive a free laptop from Connected Nations + Greater Longview United Way.  City of Longview

  • Hill College won 66-57 over KC Lady Rangers on Friday at Kilgore College’s Masters Gymnasium (Evelyn Blalock Classic), with standout 3-point plays from Kiah Goynes. Saturday’s schedule features Panola versus Hill at 11 a.m. and KC versus Midland at 1 p.m. at the same venue.  Longview News-Journal
  • On Friday, Kilgore Bulldogs won 47–31 over Spring Hill in their District 16-4A opener while Tatum Eagles beat Sabine 67–53 and West Rusk lost 59–49 to Gladewater; key scorers were Brayden Williams for Kilgore and Cooper Whiteus for Tatum.  Kilgore News Herald
  • Lauren Pyle, a former standout at Hallsville High and Tyler Junior College, signed a national letter of intent with Sam Houston State University to become the team's setter.   • Longview Lobos opened their soccer season with a 5-2 win over Community at the Forney Tournament on Friday, with goals by freshman Juan Alvarez, senior Lupe Olvera, and Aiden Saucedo. They return to action today at 11:30 a.m. against Mesquite Horn at North Forney Stadium.  Longview News-Journal

  • Fishing conditions across East Texas vary with Lake Tyler reporting slow bites with bass and crappie, while reports from Caddo and other lakes show good to excellent catches using jigs & minnows.   • The general Whitetail deer season closes Sunday at sunset, and hunters are advised to review rules from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD Handbook) for safety. Youth-only and muzzleloader seasons run from Jan. 5 to 18 for those 16 and under.  Longview News-Journal
  • In District play on Friday, the Spring Hill Lady Panthers won (50 to 39) over Kilgore after trailing until a late surge by Elani Boling and Kaylee Londeau, and Sabine defeated Tatum (40 to 29) with steady scoring by Sarah Roberts and Madison Wilson.  Kilgore News Herald
